Bruce Wayland, from New York, and Marcello De Simone, from Lecce, met in Amsterdam and 5 years ago founded Little Owl Design [now Studio DeSimoneWayland].
From A Different Cloth is a product series they presented for the first time in Milan at fuorisalone 2015, in Ventura XV space.
I had the opportunity to speak with Marcello, who tell me about the origin of the project: this series mixes italian textile patterns, reproduced on the surface of ancient Dutch shaped ceramic plates.
These plates are really unique and special, as the patterns come from Marcello’s family textile collection: some of them belonged to his grandmother, giving to the series a very personal dimension.
As they say:
The seemingly disparate elements combine to create a new narrative.
Plates are made from stoneware coloured by encapsulated stains, fired at a high temperature and then left unglazed: the result is a very beautiful mat finish that is really tactile and colourful. It’s amazing to discover that these plates are not only stunning, but also food and dishwasher safe.
I dream about having lunch and dinner everyday in them!
Please don’t miss Little Owl other project: in particular, wallpapers are amazing and the Dutch Sky one is something special.
