Soundtrack: Rockit vol. 59 – speciale MI AMI 2014 [free streeming & free download]
I’m so indie that I listen to indie music.
I’m so indie that I love handmade and independent publishing market stalls.
I’m so indie that I would stay hours admiring Baronciani while he’s drawing.
I can do nothing about that.
Since I know enough about music, but I can’t write about it, I dedicate my report to market stalls.
Thing that make me so indie, by the way.
Those who were there will find links a good selection of exhibitors, as he would have lost the business cards into the grass, or in the super dark chemical toilets.
And the others have now the possibility to find out what they missed, and recover.
This is part #3 of a very long, but ridiculously good looking article.
Incubo alla balena
A collective formed by 7 cartoonist: Alessandra Romagnoli, Annamaria Gentili, Beatrice Concordia, Elisa Menini, Flavia Barbera, Gianluca Valletta, Niccolò Tonelli.
xme xte xpe is a zine that brings together a selection of stories told by the people of Pesaro to the authors: 33 stories about anger (yellow pages), about nightmares (white pages), love (pink pages). The set is accompanied by a map of the city, so that you can discover where exactly each episode is set.
The same idea is repeated for the three successive zines: Incubo alla balena (white paper, 7 illustrated nightmares), La rabbia del canarino (yellow paper, 7 stories of anger) and Ricci da amare (pink paper, 7 love stories). Alessandro Baronciani and Davide Toffolo collaborated to the project.
At MIAMI I met Niccolò, Elisa e Gianluca, who signed the purchased copies with a drawing made on the spot: wonderful!
It has been love at first sight, so that my compulsive buying doubled: a series of fanzines for us, one for a friend who was celebrating her birthday. And the badges too.
There were also a lot of screenprinted t-shirts with the name Dodograffi.

Cargo – Viaggi grafici
Another collective formed by young cartoonists: Gabriella Ballin, Moacir Pavanati, Lucio Ruvidotti, Elisa Vignati, Ya-Chan, P.anna, Valentina Marasco, Lorenza Luzzati, Francesco Gulina, Stefano Acerbi, Simone Aliprandi, Paolo Ferrante, Giuseppe Rossello, Matteo Brenna, Andrea Tabacco.
My favs is the series Car{g}o Diario: short travel diaries, telling real stories elaborated in comics.
Bébert
A publishing company founded less than two years in Bologna, in the former working-class district of Bolognina. Four book series have been already launched: a colpi d’ascia (fiction and poetry), niandra (non-fiction), gli Irrisolti (small size publications), international (foundings from abroad) . Another series, 24fpr (cinema) will start in November 2014.
Matteo Pioppi has made very specific choices for his publishing house: minimal graphics for the covers, not to distract from the content, and copyleft on the publications.
There are exceptions, of course, and in fact, my attention was immediately drawn to the latest release by Lisa Biggi, I pompieri non escono per le donne in lacrime, illustrated by Letizia Iannaccone: a collection of nine humorous, sad and funny short stories.
And then a gem: the stories by Ambra Porcedda, Imeacht brònach. Una miserevole uscita, are available in the standard version, with the cover in a beautiful emerald green, or – and here comes the best part – in a plain white limited version: not really plain, actually, as each copy has been hand illustrated by Susana Ljuljanovic. A great collector edition.
Psychopop / Edizioni BD
A great market stall lovingly curated by Micol Beltramini, which is so passionate and told us how se has been able to translate and publish in Italian Nate Powell’s Conditions. Micol is the curator of the series Psycopop and distributes mini cards with quotes from the book that she promotes. A sort of fortune cookie without cookie, but with really magical messages. Ours was “We have to leave town and never come back, I know”.
The other books in the series are: Pat Grant, Blue and Ellen Forney, Marbles.

Agenzia X
A editorial lab that deals with the once (or maybe even now?) so-called alternative press. As the website says: “X is the graphic symbol that recalls the acronym ICS, or Idee per la Condivisione dei Saperi (that means: Ideas for Sharing Knowledge). But it also remains a variable to keep exploring”.
I bought Il potere sovversivo della carta. Dieci anni di fumetti autoprodotti in Italia, curated by Sara Pavan.
Agenzia X also organised MI PENSI, a slam poetry show on the stage of MIAMI.
